The Waikato Times. " OMNE SOLUM FO RTI PA TRIA." THUESDAY, JUNE 3, 1875.

The next mail via San Francisco will close in AuckJ^nd on tSel lth inst. Letters must be posted in tkajfa^&Sjto lkytftj^e for conveyance to Auckland by coach, <sAWsiiay^lisloth.5 AWsiiay^l i5l0th. Mr M&rm we 19am has started on a tour through thVWaipa district in order to make his opinions "on political questions understood by theelectors. We understand that it is his intention to address meetings in the different settlements. We call attention to the entertainment to take place this evening, under the auspices of the Good Templars, at the Court House, Hamilton. We have seen the programme : it is a very good one, and includes a number of songs, recitations, &c. A large attendances anticipated. Once more we call attention to the (disgraceful state of the bwdges on the Alexandra road. The driver of theuoofoil .coac^i informs us that the only means ofgfe^Qg overlie bridge by Mr Seccombes gate is to take\his hor^s out, and lead them over one at the time, and afterwards pull the coach over himself. The bridge is iv the Mangapiko Eoad Board District. Suiely it is in the power of the Board to do something to remedy this disgraceful state of affairs. It will be seen by telegram that the people of the Bay of Plenty have presented a most complimentary address\to Mr W. B. Langbridge, who has bougliNarh interest inMhis journal, and will shortly asfeumot ife management. It can but be gratifying to the settlors to leJlrn that the gentleman who is to hold a responsible position amongst them, has succeeded in making himself respected in the district iv which lie has held a similar post. We are glad to find that fchel people of Otahnhu have made a move in order to impress upon the Government the necessity of reducing the tariff on the railway. As was pointed out by some of the speakers atiihe meeting, they caa cart goods to town at leste cosj; than they can send them by rail. Tkis'shdhld^iiot he.*- In our last issue we pointed out tbetlhsu^ditjH of the rate fixed for the carriage of coals. The people of the Waikato should take t-teps to represent vthe case to the Government. It jrmy be true that the company who own the mines are the people directly interested, but every settler is interested in seeing that every facility is offered to develop the country. Is it possible to instil sufficient life into the people of Waikato to mdd ice them to take this matter up ? The lease of the punt at Hamilton for twelve months fetched £152, it was bought by Mr Lands, the lessee for the current year. The fact, that so 3 irge a sum has been paid by a man who knows what it yields, is evidence that were a bridge erected by a Company or Government, it would pay good interest, and leave a margin for sinking fund. We trust that the Government will not delay the work. If the leessees give £152 for the lease it is fair to""p*resitme thai) the tolls yield at least £350. That sum,Vt six per cpnt, would pay interest on £5,800. N We are confident, however, that wero the bridge erected, and the same toll charged as at present, the large consequent increase of traffic would exceed the sum we have named very consici jrably, in fact, we believe that it would not be beyond the mark to fix the receipts at £500 per annum. The population is largely increasing, and there will necessaiily be considerable traffic ensue upon the opening of the railway at Hamilton. The work would be reproductive, and that being the case we can conceive no legitimate reason for delay
