The ros,e and white was the first colour distinguished in front, with Ariel following. Luna was soon outpaced. The Fanny Fisher, colt, maintained a lead of about a length and a half until coming up the straight, when Ariel challenged, and a splendid finish ensued, resulting in a victory for the Fanny Fisher colt, by about a quarter of a length. Wriyht'd blk q Moose, svrs, lOst 12lb .. ?c Betting : 3 to 2 Rustic and Isleman, 2 to 1 Shamrock, 4 to 1 Paina. There was a little confusion at the first two hurdles. Isleman was the only horse that cleared them willingly. Shamrock swerved over the side fence on to the course, and had to be taken back again. Rustic tried to evade j the second hurdle, and Paina doggedly refused it. j Rustic was soon persuaded to change his mind, ! and, accompanied by Shamrock, followed Isleman over the two stone walls, Paina refused at the solid structure, and was never afterwards in the race. Isleman baulked at the fence at the foot of the hill opposite .the stand, and Rustic took first place. Shamrock also declined. Rustic jumped the fences on top of the hill in his usual style. His backers were very sanguine, when he over-reached himself at the jump at the bottom of the hill, and sustained an injury to his fetlock, which rendered him hors de combat ; and the game old horse went limping off the field amidst general regret. The race now lay between Islesman and Shamrock, who were both a little reluctant to negotiate the jumps on top of the hill. Passing the stand Islesman was about four lengths in advance. Both horses jumped the two hurdles splendily, and were loudly cheered. They proceeded without any change in position until the top of the hill, when Taylor came to grief over the furze fence. Shamrock took both the next fences well, and the race seemed to be in his hands. Taylor, however, soon re-mouated, and Islesman, negotiating the next obstacle successfully, regained lost ground, and came down the hill at a fast pace. Meurant, whose riding throughout was much admired, judiciously refrained from pushing Shamrock, ; and allowed Islesman to come up. A magnificent race home now ensued. Both horses cleared the ; last jump but one almost together. The jockeys commenced to punish, and the people to cheer. Islesman was abo it half a length ahead over the < List hurdle, but whon the horses settled into the ! running they were going neck and nejk. Islesman's '

Betting : 3to 2, Yatterina and Maori Weed ; 3 to 1, the Belle ; 5 to 1, Belle of t,he Isles ; 10 to 1, Skylark. The flag fell to a good start. Passing the stand, Maori Weed was first, Belle of the Isles second, Yatterina third, the Belle fourth, and Skylark last. At the turn, Yatterina took second place, and the Belle of the Isles dropped behind. Going through the cutting, Yatterina had a clear lead, and as the turn was approached, the Belle challenged Maori Weed for second place. Kelly, however, asked the Weed a qnestibn to which he responded, and ran Yatterina very close, the victory only being gained by about 1J lengths. The Belle was third, and Skylark fourth. Time, 3mins. At the turn, Daybreak went to the front, Eclipse dropped behind, and Pakuranga took second place, but soon afterwards had to relinquish it to Kingfisher. Daybreak, however, won by about four lengths, hard held. Time, 2min 33secs. \

This was a gift to Daniel O'Rorke, who was the favorite at the start. He was put up for sale, and bought in at £20. CONSOIATION HANDICAP of 20sotb ; distance, 1 milo ; entrance, 2sovs Mr Young's Bedouin, Bst . ... .. ... 1 Mr J. Thorpe's Eclipse, Bst 71b. ... ... . . 0 Before this race wa3 concluded the 5 o'clock train had left for town, and it was nearly dark. There\ were a good many enthusiastic sportsmen, however, who waited to watch the race, and the course was not deserted until the time for the departure of the Mercer train for town. No accidents occurred on the course worthy of notice, but a man was thrown from his horse on the road, and killed. We understand that a match will take place on the course at 2 o'clock this afternoon, between Mr Isaacs' Daybreak and Mr Pohika Hapuka's Shamrock — distance l^miie, and weights 9 stone. It is also likely that on Wednesday Shamrock and Islesman will go over the steeplechase course for £50 aside.
