THE FBENCH ELECTIONS.
The « Daily Telegraph" says that an unusual amount of interest has been excited in France by the two elections which were held on Sunday last. In the present- condition of purges, in which the Wallon amendment, recognizing the existence of" the Republio, was carried by a doubtful majority of' one^ the accession of- two votes i» one side or tho other of tke Assembly is in itself a, matter of no small importance. But the real ujwhot of the elrctibns has been indecisive. A Bepublican has been returned for the Seine et Oi^e ; a Monarcbist.hasbeen virtually elected \>y the Cdtes dv Nonfy and in each instance the defeated candidate has polled a, vote inditing great strenght. The "Telegraph." is disposed to think that the result of these two elecdisposed to think that the result of these two elections — the first which have taken place since the Assembly consented to acknowledged* by its* vota tlie existence of the Republic not unfairly the state of popular sentiment as to the vote in question. The " Post " thinks that the late electioneer© not so much a triumph for the Republicans as * defret for the Imperialists. It must be admitted tHat the recent astounding coalition in the French Assembly has. bad its effect on the elections — that ia to say, upon the feelings and views of the country^ But white still engrossed in seeking to avoid thW danger of Imperialism, which their own fears^alope have made appear so nigh, they may not perceive, until too late,, that they have wandered 1 on to, and are being swallowed, up in, the marsh of absolute Republicanism..
