ROYAL SOCIE TY FOR PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.
To the Eiitqr of fch« WAikito Times. Sir, — In your report of the entertainment at "West Hamilton on Tuesday evening, I was pleased to observe reference made to the -recitations of two boys, pupils at the District School, who received the approbation of the audience on that occasion, and also your approval ; but inasmuch* as ther« appears some misapprehension on your part as to the selection of the piece which they recited, which you deem too childish, I beg to state that the valuable and interesting monthly magazine you refer to, from which the selection was made, is principally in»tended for the instruction of the rising generation, i in order that they may think and reflect on the im(portance of kindness to the animal world (which is unable to plead for itself). The magazine is so well appreciated in the United Kingdom that there is scarcely a household where it is not to be seen, and it is perused eagerly by old and young, because of the good and pleasure which results therefrom. It is to be regretted that the Magazine and the Society under whose auspices it is published, is scarcely known in New Zealand. This may, in a great measure, account for the acts of cruelty which we so frequently witness with so much pain. It is to be hoped that steps w.ill be taken to establish a " Society for tlie Protection of the A ninial World in New Zealand," as through the absence of any ' special protectors of dumb anjnjals they are subjected to much unnecessary suffering. In the sister
have loug been in existenci and nucce^ful ape r tion. This statement can be prove Iby the perusal of the above-mentioned monthly publication, which contains moat useful and instructive inform ition as to the operations of that useful society known aa "The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals," and of its numerous branches. The parent society hai been in existence for more than half a century, and having had the privilege of being a subscriber and member for upwards of thirty years, I am in a jwsition to te»tify to the many and great blessings that have resulted therefoim, not only by the prevention of cruelty to anfmals but in many other respects. In the words oQtf&'leridge: — " He pnweth well who lovtfi wall. B >th ivan, and biri, mw\ Hr**t ; * He pr ijftti beit, who loreb best, All thitU'f, both great bu I *»m-ill ; F«>r the df »p God who ltw»th ns, H« made «»d )o?«-th all —Coltridg*." I am (fee. G. X Enoall , Hamilton, April 1, 1875. 4 P.S.— Mr Smith, chemiat, Hamilton, ha* kindly consented to permit a few of the past numbers of this cheap an \ interesting magiztne to rermain for inspection in his shop j he has also liberally offered to receive orders for the same, to be delivered monthly at cost price.
