(From the Daily ' Southern Cross.) OHINEMURI.
Mackaytown, Tuesday. Warden Eraser has returned, after consultation •with Sir Donald McLean at Makatu with reference •to * the mysterious issue of miners' rights. The Government investigation- sought for by the Warden will be granted, and the time for hearing will shortly' be- fixed. •Work ' has been ' resumed in the Prospectors' claim. Water is now flowing in from the faoe, and the large brown reef is close at hand. A few shifts will now be sufficient to open it. Work has been carried on during the holidays in a few 'claims, and the shareholders of the Home Rule, near the prospectors, have made excellent progress with the sinking. Work has been resumed on the road. The men started operations on a new section, which will obviate the river. Hogan has finished his contract of the road to Rotokohu. No word of Mr Mackay, and it is not exactly kno\yn where he is :he may go- to the Thames before coining here.
* Grahanistown, Tuesday. 'A requisition, signed by 300 electors, was presented to Mr Davis, mayor, to-day, asking him to become a candidate l for the vaoant seat in the Provincial Council. He has accepted the requisition, and it is believed that Mr Rowe will retire. The excursionists to Ohinemuri numbered some 500 persons, and the races and sports are spoken of as most successful. ■The remains of the poor fellow, Willi.im-Brooker, who was drowned while out prospecting in the Ohinemuri range, were brought to town this morning in the p.s. Effort. The Effort and other steamers had excursionists on board, and only the captain of the Effort would cotisent to bring the corpse down for interment, as it was merely wrapped in canvas. His humane conduct was highly- approved. A sample of stone containing guM, from the Ohinemuri, exhibited at the National -Bank to-day, has caused' much attention.
Drury, Tuesday. At the nomination to-day of a •• member to serve in the Provincial Council for 'this district, in the place of the late Mr William Hay. Mr .lames Crawford was proposed by Mr D. Middleton, seconded by Mr W. Smith ; Mr William Morgan, of Fulrekohe, was projx>sed by Mr W. Kerr, of Springbank ; and "Mr'CHspe, of Mauku. was proposed by Mr G. Gr. Walters, The show of hands* was in favor of Mr Crawford 16 ; Mr Morgan had 5 ; and Mr Crispe .7. A poll was demanded, which takes place on the 15th of April. Thirty electors were present. Ta-uranga, Tuesday. The tourists' grievance at the Lakes, regarding hotel"accomtnodation, is-lessened. Mr Hannon has Opened a new hotel at Ohinemutu. - Sir ' Donald McLean is still at Maketu, interviewing the disputants around. Nothing is doing at Tftufafagft,- aiwF everybody is laying up comfortably for the measles.
Napier, "Friday. Mtidh'-sickness - prevails here. Several cases of typhoid lever are reported. Dr Gibbes published a. tatter in to-day's " Hawke's Biy Herald *' on the subject, and on the want of hospital'accommodation. Urgent cases have been on the gro.und of ;no room. Alterations are much wanted, and, the,lx)cal Bwird of Healtli are .going to take |i the, matter up.
Wellington, Tuesday. The " Evening Post " says Mr James Prendergast, will; to-morrow, be sworn .in.as.Cnief Justice of the Colony. The oath will be administered by Mr Justice Johnston, and the new Chief Justice will immediately after wards leave for Otago, to preside at the approaching fitting of the Supreme 1 Court.
CJiristchurch, Tuesday. The Theatrical Costume cricket match yesterday .was-yery succeaful. The drosses were good and the play .amusing. -There was x. large attendance., but owing to the law not, permitting a charge to be made to the cricket ground wjiich is publio property, only .£3O Is jvere received in. voluntary contributions at the gate. "The annual rifle association meeting yesterday passed off successfully. Dunedin, Tuesday. - Easter Monday was not observed us a holiday, but a large number of business placet were closed. The Caledojii«m sports were very successful. The wrestling match between Robertson and Twyson for JjoO and the champion belt, worth J&25, were postponed in consequence of an injury to Twyson's KneQ. The settling on the races Was fairly attended and on the whole satisfactory. Mr Delamain takes o.er JbtKK) in stakes.
