It is rumored in Ottawa that Lord Dnfferin will shortly resign, and it is said that he will be appointed "VSceroy of livtia. Dr E. M. Grace, the well-known cricketer, has bb v een> elected coroner for West Gloucestershire, , wmioiit opposition, on the nomination of the Duke of Beaufort. On the sfch January the psws in Plymouth Church j (Mr Beecher's), were let for 13,000 dollars more | than they obtained last year. The brig J. ft. Ford arrived here on ahe 22nd ult, and reports that a man named N. McLarrity, a stow-away, was taken down with the : sraatt-pox, and died t>n Feb 4. On her arrival here, the mate and a seaman were riowii with it. The mate died on the following day. The brig is in quarantine. Contrary to general expectation- the Pacific Mail Subsidy Bill of 1872, was repealed by the Senate, notwithstanding hosts of memorials from merchants Boards of Trade, and John Itoach. The company now propose to institute a suit against those who received the bribes. The action of the Senate is censured by many, as punishing innocent parties, and the present stockholders for actionsof the ones. Steps in the matter have been taken. Hon A. G. -Riddle has "filed in the district law courts saifcs ag'iinst persons shown by the* Ways and Means Committee investigation to have received money belonging to the Pacific Mail Company to lobpy the subsidy bill through, and the usual summons has been issued. -,; The apple crop of Connecticut in 1874 was worth 2,000,000d01. The official report of the Building Inspectors of Philadelphia for 1873,\ gives the total number of dwelling-houses erectedjas £31fy and of stores and dwellings, 177. The" whole number, including churches, colleges, factories, school-houses, &c, 5,040. Mr Alfred George Buckland, L.S.A., of Auckland, New Zealand, having undergone the necessary examinations for the diploma, has just been admitted a member of the Koyal College of Surgeons. Lieutenant Irwin G. Maling, 35th Foot, has been appointed aide-de-camp to the Marquis of Noimanby, K.C.M.G., Governor of New Zealand. The statement that Ciptain S. P. Oliver has been nominated by Sir Arthur Gordon, Governor of Fiji, ono of his aide-de-camp, has been contradicted. The directors of the Australian Agricultural Company will recommend, an interim dividend of £2 per share, free of incqiue^tajc, at the half-yearly meeting to be held on Fehintaty 16. The interim dividend at the corresponding*" period of 1874 was £1 10-5 per share. * it is announced from Washington that the United .Slates Senate has rejected the Canadian Keciprocity Treaty without -a division. Ladies in Buckinghamshire have been following the example recently set by their Melbourne sisters and have been playing cpicket matches. Eleven ?aclie3 of the parish of Naah have beaten a similar team from Great Harwood by 115 against 86 runs and an innings to spare. Between seventy and eighty women are now studying in Boston University, and a still larger number in its preparatory department.
