MAORI EXHIBITS.
We were much pleased to notice the very creditable manner in which our Maori fellow-subjects came to the front. The wheat shown by them, was quite equal to that' brought for inspection by the Europeans. There was alsa a very good show of potatoes, kumeras, melons, purnkins, and of course a number of mats, kits, &&, The names of the winners of the different prizes may be particularly interesting to the parties immediately concerned, but to the majority of our readers, they would be unprononcable and of no interest- The idea of giving them prizes was a very good one,, as every opportunity of bringing them in contact with Europeans should be availed of. They were very eager that their own produce should get the prize, to some extent no doubt, because the money meant so many bottles of rum, and further because to win, adds to their importance amongst their own people. We were sorry to observe that there iras a good deal of drunkenness amongst them, and that when under the influence of the spirit,, they endeavoured to imitate the lowest class of bushmen when in the same state. This evidences a desire to imitate the lowest of our raGe in their worst moments.
