Opunake, Tuesday. A detachment of the Armed Constabulary consisting of 24 men all told has arrived at Opunake. Through stress of weather the ' Napier ' had to make for Taranaki Roadstead, but returned soon enough, and landed the men at Opunake with their tents, &c. The detachment is quartered at Te Namu. All the leading native chiefs of the district are against the few disturbers, and fore there need be little apprehension of disturbance. 'I he expected presence of the j ment has already had a salutary effect, and\iow they are come it will be more useful. The Armed Constabulary landed this morning at seven o'clock. After breakfasting at the hotel, they procerded to Te Nani, the disputed property, accompanied by Commissioner Parris and the native police, under Captain Wilson. They found a few natives in possession of one of Mr. Bayley's houses, who refused to leave. After a very severe struggle they were ejected by the native police who behaved well. Possession was taken ••.'toy the Armed Constabulary. A few scratches, and the loss of a few Landfills of hair* from the native police's beards, was all the damage that'V&s done. Nothing serious is expected to eventuate, Commissioner Parris is supported by several influential chiefs of the Ngatairumui. Both the native and European forces were under the command of Captain Wilson, advised by Commissioner Parris. The presence of the Armed Constabulary . had the desired effect of intimidating the supporters of v tlife movement of the Hauhaus. Notwithstanding" their threats to remain, they have crossed over to their own territory.
Wellington, Tuesday. The Government have heard from Mr Vogcl. lie says, he is hai*d at work in arranging lor the loan, but does not say when lie arrived. Christchurch, Wednesday. The New Zealand Shipping Company have received the following advices from London by telegraph dated February 16. Wellington for Dunedin, Cicero for Canterbury, Caller Ou for Auckland, had sailed. London wheat market declining, best N.Z. being auoted at 445. per quarter.
Auckland, Wednesday. The ship India has arrived from London with 193 government immigrants. There has been unpleasantness between the Captain, Doctor, and Passengers during the voyage. There is likely to> be an enquiry by the Immigration Commissioners. There was great excitement at the opening of Ohinemari to-day, but no serious low. Horses are employed to carry miners' rights from Mi ckaytown to the ranges, and exciting races ensued.
