PIGEON MATCH.
The Pigeon Match between s^ven of the H.imley 01USI Club arid a like number of the Waikato Club came off yesterday in Mr Claude's paddock at Eist Hamilton.. Unfortunately the pigeons had not recovered from the effects of their journey f»om Auckland and when let 1 >ose from the trap, missies had to be cast at them before they could be prevailed upju to rise. The result as will i>e seeirbeluw, was a complete beatiug for the local team. No do.ibt the bad shooting of many ot the competitors is due to the uncertainty of the birds. In the evening the visitors were entertained at dinner at the Hamirtun Hotel, by the members of the Wailato Cub. About forty sat down to dinner- Mr Cox occupied the chair and give the usual loyal toasts whicl) were drunk with enthusi: asm, afcer which ~ Mr Claude proposed the health oiNffljk Visitors, he was soivy that the Waikato Club had such a beating, he believed, himself that a team ruig it be selected that could beat the representa ives. Mi* Wyuyard replied, and expressed himself highly gratified with the reception he and his companions had met with. Mr Swindley proposed the Waikato Club in a humourous speech* Mr Vialou as the umpire for the Club responded. Mr Mii'ks responded for the umpire in doing so siid ho had little to do, in fact an umpire's duty W4B a sinecure, when gentleman met for the sake of sport they could settle th^ir own difficulties. He made some very trite remaks as to the advantage the young men of. Auckland wofild derive. Jfrom taking to manly sports in place of hangings/after barmaids and indulging in effeminate adiiisenjents. He described the feelings of a true sportsman in yraphic terms, and completely carried his Hirers with him. The health of the members not included in, the representative team followed which was responded to by Mr Hammond. The Press was the next toast, it was briefly responded to by Mr Jones and Mr Holloway. The toast of the Ladies closed the formnl proceed- 1 ings, and the usual songs and festivities were kept up for some hours, in a manner that only true sports mou are able. N The Dinner which was served in the New Bailding of the Hotel, great credit on ths host and hostess Mr & Mrs Gwynne.
