THE DELEGATED POWERS UNDER THE GOLDFIELDS ACT.
The Thames Advertiser says that there is a general desire at the Thames that the powers under the GoldfiekU Act should no longer be delegated to the Superintendent, but should be diiectly administeied by the General Government. The same opinion has prevailed for some time, but as the larje Mr. Williamson had always taken a deep interest in the affairs of the goldfiekl, and had done nothing to forfeit the confidence of the miners, no movement was attempted during his lifetime to alter the existing state oi things. It is now feared that the ne\t Superintendent may be incompetent to deal with goldfiekl affairs, or will take little interest in the welfare of the mining communities ; and there is, moreover, some doubt as to whether the powers of the Governor can be delegated under the Act of 1866.
