A determined attempt at murder was made last night.* A. man named Igo went to the house of a laborer namsd Woods who was sitting on his doorstep reading; he struck him on the he id with a tomahawk. He then rushed into the house saying he would kill everybody in it. A policeman heard the noise, and Igo declared he meant it. The case has been remanded by the 8.M., Wood being too ill to attend the Court. Jgo's wife is said to be living with Woods. Auckland, Monday. Mr Kelly, solicitor, whilst coming down the stairs of his residence at Mount Eden, fill and broke his thigh. The Crown Prince Gold Mining Company was sold by auction pro forma to-day, and was knocked down at ,£3OOO. A youth named McCleary, whilst boxing with one of Dr Wrights sons was suddenly seized with a paralytic fit and has not spoken since. Richard Lisle is committed for trial, for forging a cheque drawn on Major Jackson, he cashed it in the purchase of a coat at Dejoings store. Measles is very prevalent six clerks in the Bmk of New Zealand, and many other adults are affected. In consequence of the illness of Dannett with measles ther° will be only one gig crew for the reg.itt \. The second crew of the rowing club has been disbanded. There was a boat accident in tho harbour to day. A new gig for the North Shore Club wa; being tried by the crew, when a plank came in, the boat swampid. The craw was rescued by a baat put out from the yacht Spcret. The ship Warwick ii*3 been secured as flagship.
The ship Avalanche with 230 Government emigrants on bou'd, his arrived here. Seventy of the emigrants are for Wellington. She made the passage in 92 days from land to land, and after landing p isoengers proceeded to Wellington. The Provincial Council have adjourned sin die. The Appropriation Bill shows over £30,000 voted this year. A motion was tabled re the abolition of the Provinces but it did not come on. The schooner Clio got safely off the reef at the Wnitara, and put to sea. Mr Huoke, Immigration Agent, has received letters from Mr Burton, agent in Eigland, saying he has received plenty of applications from moneyed men desirou3 of settling in New Zealand, but few from laborers.
Wellington, Saturday. In a General Government Gazette issued today Mr Frederick Lambert Prime is appointed a member of the Central Board of Health for the Province of Auckland, vice Mr H<3nry Isaacs resigned. Mr James Irvin Wilson is appointed a member of the Licensing Court for the district of Whang irei Heads, Whangarei, Mangapai and Waipii. Mr William Anderson is gazetted Captain, and Mr John Foster Saunders Sufe-Lieutenant of the Auckland Engineer Volunteers, commission, dated 17th June, 1874. The. ships Michael Angelo and Ber/ir have arrived : the former, eigh»y-one days from the Downs, brings 292 emigrants who are reported free from any disease. There were six deaths. On January 18, the master of the verfssl, Captain Luckie, was found dead in his cabin, the causa of death being heart disease. The Bsrar has scarlet fever on board, and no loss than 21 deaths have resulted from that alone, while there are 20 can* a under treatment. The ship has been placed in quarantine, and will be detained at least a fortnight. The fever broke out three days after leaving port. Captain Mitchell, who had come up from QU%q to take charge of fcha sMp Jesuie Headman, was found dead this morning in nib cabin. He had been many years sailing between Home and Vffw .Zealand, and v/aa well known in the colony. The produce market is dull.

Kaiapoi, Saturday. There has been very great etciteuient here about the polling fur the district of Kaiapoi ; both candidates working very hard. The result of the poll is as follows : Bowen, 294 ; Beswiek, 192. These figures show a majprity for Mr Bowen 102, No pie\ ious election ever caused so much interest to be taken:
Inverc&rgiil, Saturday. The chairman of the Railway and Immigration Committee of this city has sent a cable telegram to the Kon. Julius Vogel, reminding him of his promise to send a ship with immigrants every six weeks to the Bluff harbour. There is great scarcity of every description of labour here.
