JOTTINGS BY THE WAY.
"Wanted. — Some one willing to break their leg by stepping into the holes, in the two bridges across the Waikato river at Cambridge. Or some one to break their neok and horses' legs whilst riding across the aforesaid bridges. A parson or magistrate preferred. Wanted. — To know who are the responsible parties for neglecting the repairs of the said bridges — and as to whether they intend mending their ways, or continue to allow some " innocent at home " to put patch upon patch " out of pure love and affection." Pro Bono Publico. Wanted. — To know who will volunteer to become the first victim to tumble down the (un) protected cutting along the bank of the river. A member of j the Pukekura Road Board would receive the full permission of the public. • Wanted. — To know whether the structure across \ Sandy Creek, is a Bridge, or a " Heathen Chinese puzzle," intended to delude that ' sagacious animal the horse. The other day as two " Fair Waikato Belles " were riding across the above mentioned structure, their horses became puzzled as to what that was, and precipitated the two young ladies into the creek, one had a very narrow escape from drowning. We suppose the Road Board was not responsible for the horses becoming frightened. But how about the safety of the bridges 1 We much regret we were not there at the time — what a chance for a gallant rescue— how we would have immortalised ourselves — what gushing gratitude would have issued in silvery tones from the ruby lips of the fair charmers upon our willing ears — but, we Vernt there — so we returned to Cambridge, and entering the " leading " house quietly solaced ourselves with a "cup of tea," OOnh — no — we " prefer Brandy and Soda."
