A TOUGH MEAL.

From an interesting article on Fiji, which appears in the drgus of December 19th, we extract the following :—": — " There are probably few men in the world who can boast of having eaten a pair of top-boots, but there is a Fijian now living in the islands who enjoys that distinction. The tribe which killed *nd ate the Rev Mr Baker some years ago having been conquered by the Bauans, the members are dispersed over the group, and one of those who participated in the crime was afterwards well known to Prince Joe, who related the story on the way up to Sydney in the Dido. ' This man,' said Joe, ' told me that when the bodywas divided, the legs formed the portion allotted to him. They were encased in top boots, but this cannibal tribe having never seen a pair of boots before, they all regarded the outercasing as something peculiar to the form of the a* hite man, and it never occurred to one of them that the limbs could be extracted from the leathern covering. The possessor of the legs baked them in the ordinary way, and was surprised to find how difficult they were to masticate. He baked them again, and still being dissatisfied with the results, he tried boiling them. Then he attacked them every day for a week, and the last morsel was consumed at the end of that time. When the performer of this feat became acquainted with Europeans two or three years ago, he learnt for the first time that he had eaten a man's boots/ "
