The races to-day were moderately attended. There were four acceptances for the Free Handicap. Yatterina, Parawhemia, Belle, Never Miss. Parawhenua held the lead throughout, and won easily, Yatterina second. Handicap Steeplechase, Rarey 1. Moose 2. Town Plate, Templeton 1. Ngaro 2. Consolation Handicap, there were only two entries Yatterina and Kingfisher both Mr Walters horses. The Ellerslie Sports were thinly attended. The Judges charge in the Supreme CouiH , referred mainly to the excellence of the gaol management. Thompson, Quick's manager, pleaded guilty. The Crown Prosecutor recommended him to mercy. Sentence deferred for production of witnesses to character. Jane Gledhill, for stealing from the person was sentenced to six months. William Perry, charged with, breaking and entering was sentenced to fifteen months. William Wirehouse, for embezzlement was sentenced to eighteen months. Wilson for larceny, as a bailee, being his sixth conviction was sentenced to three years.
Wellington, Monday. Judge Johnston evinced considerable emotion to-day when bidding farewell to the Court, Bar and the public of the, place, where he had spent so many happy years of his life. It is reported that a seam of bituminous coal 18 inches thick, has been, discovered near Feathersfcone on the Masterton line of vail s vay.

Dunedin, Monday. The sailors on the Taranaki s.s., have struck for higher wages than £& per month.
