RUSSIA GERMANY AND DENMARK. (FROM THE SPE CTATOR)
The only important rumours of the week have concerned the relations of Russia to Germany and Denmark. The TagesM esse, of- Vienna — which has been alretdy contradicted from Copenhagen, where the rumour of any proposal to merge Denmark in Germany would cause inconvenient excitement, but not as yet contradicted from Berlin, — affirms that overtures were made at Copen'iagan intimating that Denmark might even rewver the whole of Sle3vig, if she were inclined to cast in her fate cordi ally with i-mnany, to enrich the En pire with her fleet, and b.come a constituent State iv it, of course therefore electing members to the Germ in Parliamt nt, and nominating a representative in the Council ot' Princes. It is further asserted that ihese overtures were at once declined, and that Russia, hearing of the proposals, and vehemently alarmed for her own naval strength in the Baltic, at once took au opportunity of allowing, in relation to Spiin her alacrity to check the growth of Germ iv influence —whence the Czar's friendly letter to Don C.u-loa. On the other hand, the friendly relations which appeared to be growing up between Denmark and Germany, at the time of her visit of the German ironclad to Copenhagen, a month or two ago, were suddenly cooled, and the German Government in Siesvig-Holstein t>egan turning the screw upon Danish residents ,vnd visitors. The important part of the rumour is probably not justified by any official proposal, but it is exceedingly likely to represent dip. omitic tentative* cautiously thrown out; for Germany would like, not only the Danish fleet, but a n«w accession of thoroughly sturdy Protestant subjects. If the prospect of Denmtrk's absorption should ever become a near one, the old idea about European " balance of power," would come in for a new lease of life. v\ hen the, rod of Bismat'c x uwallqwH at a gulp the rods of all the other European soothsayers, Earope will begin to fidget, and not without cause. Empires are always said to mean «' peace," but as uniformly seem fated to destroy it..
