Auckland, Wednesday. Sharev vp.KET.— Alexander Saunders reports— JSTational Insurance Buyers, 28s; Thames, 20s; Smile, 455; Bismarck 6s; Tokatea, 9s 3d; Cure, 17s 6d. Sellers : South British, 50a ; Caledonians, £5. The public here are much disappointed at the non-arrival of the s.s. Hero. It is quite unaccountable. At the time of the departure of the Mikado, she had left Melbourne en route for Sydney. John Gillies, a recent arrival, who had obtained work on the Kaipara railway,' went into a creek for the purpose of washing a shirt. He has not been seen since; and though every effort has been made to discover what has become of him, the search has hitherto been unsuccessful. A rifle match took place to-day between No. 3 company Auckland Volunteers and the Wellington Battery of Artillery. The scores were— Auckland 400, Wellington 388, thus leaving the Auckland team a winner by 12 points.

Dunedin, Tuesday. Messrs Meyers and Co.'s premises at Lawrence were partially destroyed by h're yesterday. The flames were first noticed in the second storey, which was entirely burnt out, and the lower part of the building was n,«ch damaged by water, and also th* stock. No cause has yet been assigned, The insurances on the building and stock are. Northern insurance Company £1,400, Victoria Insurance pZ Pai V 5 f ' ?° Uth British k^nce Company £201. The fire brigade was very successful in preventing the extension of the fire. The deputation from the Harbour Board waited on the Hon, Mr Reynolds to-day, re the delegation of powers by the Governor. Mr Reynolds said there was no objection on the part of the General Government to delegate to the Board similar powers to those given to the Auckland Board immediately on the Superintendent delegating the powers he possessed. & The licensing bench refused the majority of applications for publicans' licenses. Mr Bath«nte as chairman, remarked on the absurdity of tho°presont course of first refusing and then, after the same applicant had persistently applied for a renewal getting it, simply through people persevering, and stated that the present Bench would adopt a totally different policy, " and refuse, unless under very strwsr circumstances, to grant a license once reJ«is.' ! ; and anyone mice fined for a breach of the Licensing Act mM nover apply for another license
