SIR GEORGE GREY'S PETITION ON THE LAND FUND.

AT the request of Sir George Grey, His Honor the Superintendent of Auckland forwarded to His Excellency the Governor, on the 7th instant, Sir George Grey's petition, having reference to the appropriation of the fund arising from the sxle of land within this colony. The following is a copy of the correspondence upon the subject : — Superintendent's Office, Auckland, 0 Tr . , 7th Noyember, 1874, Sir,— Herewith 1 hare the honor to forward to jour Excellency, for transmission to the Eight Honorable the Secretary of State for the Colonies, the enclosed copy of a petition addressed to mo ns Superintendent, by Sir George. Grey, X.L B , of the Island of Kawau, within tins province, having reference to the appropriation of the fund arising from the sale of lands within this colony. 1 have consulted my Executive Council as to the course winch should be adopted in order to comply with die prayer of the petition, namely ;-That the Provincial Government should take such steps as may be judged most expedient to protect tlie rights of the inhabitants of the province of Auckland in this matter, and to delay any hurried action of the .British Parliament in relation thereto ; and it was considered that the proper and constitutional course is, to forward a copy of the petition to your Excellency for transmission accordingly. I tiust that the importance of the subject of this petition will commend it to your Eicelloncy's early consideration in order that the petition may be transmitted to Her Majesty s Imperial Government by the earliest possible opportunity.— l have, <fee, J. Sir,— l am directed by the Governor to acknowledge the receipt ot your Honor's letter of the 7th November, forwarding for transmission to the Secretary of State, the enclosed copy of a petition addressed to your Honor, as Superintendent, by Sir George Grey, X.C.8., having reference to tho appropriation of the fund arising from the sale of lands within tho colony. His Excellency regrets that ho must regard it as a course at once irregular and inconvenient to comply with your Honor's request that this petition, addressed to your Honor as Superintendent of Auckland, should be transmitted by the Governor of this colony to the Imperial Government ; but 1 am to add that any proper representation which Sir George Grey or your Honor and your Executive may please to address directly to Her Majesty, or to the Secretary of State, will be promptly transmitted by HlBH 18 Excellency in the usual course.
