Auckland, Friday. The police have returned from the Quarantine Station, bringing with them the luggage of the Hydaspes' saloon passengers. The immigrants were perfectly quiet. The Waitangi, ship, has arrived with 400 immigrants, making tho passage in 92 days from land, 111 days from port to port. Eleven deaths and five births occurred on the voyage. The immigrants have landed. Several stacks of barley, wheat, and oats, the property of Malaghan, were destroyed by fire at Queenstown yesterday; they were insured in the New Zealand Company for .£4OO. In the Horticultural show to-day there were few exhibitions, the rose class being the best represented. Alexander Saunders reports sales— Bank of New Zealand, 360s ; South British, 49s Gd. Wellington, Friday. The Government has accepted the offer of the Steam Company for the conveyance of the interprovincial mails to connect the San Francisco service with the ports of the colony, The sum stipulated for is £2,300 per annum, the contract to last during the temporary San Francisco service. Martin, for £200, for defamation of character and slander. Several law suits are pending in connection with the Comet case. The Guardian, in referring to Bowen's appointment from the Bench to a Ministerial seat, says the step will excite surprise, and not a little indignation. He was only known as a Resident Magistrate, and the writer speaks of his connection with Governor Bowen. What influence was exercised by his astute relative to bring about the appointment will probably never be known ; but seeing that Mr Vogcl was in tho vice-chair at the Governor's dinner, it is sufficient to justify the suspicion that the Premier had been cajoled by the blandishments of the Victorian Governor, and warns the Government to be cautious. It concludes : That this acquisition, if it be one, of Mr Bowen,, as Minister of Justice, will entail a loss of some of their many supporters. Another such mistake, it asserts, will be fatal.

The rumours of the Duke of Northumberland's intention to embrace the Catholic faith are declared to be false. The Princess Thyiu of Denmark is to marry the son of the King of Hanover. Experts have been dispatched from London to investigate the Erie Railway affairs. Six thousand Yorkshire miners are locked out for refusing to accept a reduction of wages. The East Pariah Church, Aberdeen Forest, Scotland, has bean burnt down.
France. Elect iun riots have taken place in Corsica between the ibllwwera of Prince Napoleon and M. Pierre. M. Gambetta bus been delivering political speeches in the South of France. M. Thiers announces his belief that a R- publican Government is meant for France. The City of Melbourne brings news from America to the 12th October. The Government has paid British officials the full amount of the indemnity awarded by the Mexican Commission. Brigham Young is dangerously ill. Surdraan and Co., sugar merchants, of New York, have failed. A terrible riot occurred in the North and South of Illinois between labourers on the Delaware railway. Many were injured. The Government have arranged for a tri-inonthly mail between California and China. William Ewarte is spoken of as the most likely candidate for the Presidentship of America. The American riflemen beat Rigby's Irish team. Masked burglars robbed the Pennsylvanian banks, Philadelphia, having first gagged the president and cashier. The Custom-house and eight dwellings were swept away by a tornado. Negro disturbances prevailed in the South Western States. The yellow fever is raging in Pensacola. A man named Salmon threw himself over Niagara falls. The grand trunk railway, Canada, has changed the guage from broad to narrow. Townsend and Co., bankers, of New Haven, have failed for nearly three million dolUrs. The second match to decide the superiority for long distance of breech and muzzleloaders, resulted in favour of the latter. Both Tilton and Moultoii have been indicted for malicious libel by the Rev Ward Beecher. Mr Gordon Bennett, of the N. Y. Herald, offers to pay one-fourth of the entire cost of a new Arctic expedition. 39 medical students have been arrested at Buffalo as resurrectionists.
