NftARUtWAHIA CO r.EV.M. The opening match of the season was played in Mr Hume's paddock (kindly l-:nt for the occasion) on Saturday last, and the lovers of the rioblo old ganuwere favoured beyond expectation by tiio weather, which of late has been, to stiy the least of it, " xaiy precarious." Of course up to the last moment some of the players were missing, but about 1 1 a.m. the two captains, Mr F. Edgecume for Ngaruawahia, and Mr fcJandes foi the E.V.Ms, faced one another coin m hand and tossed. Dame Fortune thus early declared herself us the E.V.M. skipper yon the toss and elected to go to the wickets in order to get the bo&t of the ground, which looked like getting cut tip bv the play. Kellow and Mason first defended the stumps against the bowling of Taylor and Brown, S but. both of them failed to do anything towards i giving the .scoters work. Mooney followed, and he and Foloy Lid a lively time of it for some overs, the former getting 8 and the latter 15 by some good leg play. The only other who scored was Sandes, who got 0 and then, gave best to a trimmer from F. JSdgecumbo. Captain Sebofield carried out his bat for 22 — 1 h'j innings finishing for a total of 52. The N.C.C. then tishunu'd Ihe defensive, but no stand was in.ule of consequence, the highest scores being 5 each b\ F. Edgecuuihe, Brown, and Sheehy. Foiey and Cadlon bowled from cither end all through the innings, the former securing 4 and the latter 6 .wickets. The E.V.M.'s then started again, the scoring being slow at iirst, and it lo ,kod pretty blue at one time- wnea Foley, Mooney, Carlton, and ►^ndes were nil sent back witli vtry small figures opposite- to their nit -i> 8, but Kellow and Clare made a stand and the total was run up to (58, thus leaving i the N.C.C.. *9 to get to win. This th<»y could not j do, though tite brothers Edgecumbe and Brown made :i good stand, and neces'itated a change in the bowling, which had the desired effect. F. Edgecumbe put 14 together, thus making bin total of 19 the highest in the match. Tuo total score made in the 2nd innings wan 37, so that tho E.V.M.'s won the match by 51 runs. The fielding was pretty good all round, considering that this was the first match of the season. Taylor, Brown, and the two Edgecumbes, doing well for the N.C.C., the fielding of the E.V.M.'s being pretty equal all round. Some good catches were made, two at point by Sandes, taking two wickets in the first two balls of the .second inngs, the third ball of t ~ same over being well held at leg by K.-llow— J he v .C.C. thus losing tiireo of thoir best men in the thiee first balls — of the first over — a most unusual occurrence, and one which \eiy much damped the spirits of some of those who followed. In the evening a spread was gone through at the Central Hotel, and after the usual feeding, and the usual toasts, Ac usual conviviality was of course indulged in, and as usual everybody enjoyed themselves immensely. Messrs Holloway and Small acted as umpires, and Messrs Barnes and Skeene as scorers. We trust that this is only the first of a series <>i matches to be played in our district, and we hope ere long to sec borne of the other settlements come down and try their j stivnvjth against the Ngaruawahia Club.
