ALEXANDRA.
We have scarcely any news here worth recording ; ihe gale of Monday last blew away the surface for an inch at least of the freshly sown Government paddock, but that in a disaster easily remedied. Witiora was down here on Saturday, but that need croate no excitement, a« I believe his mission is merely ploughing at Kopun. I think wo mny safely expect some lino we;itlicr for a shoit time now- -and not before it in needed, as grass crops and everything nre very backward ; but even the blessing of lino weather has a coi.iinry influence on poor Alexandra, as since a shoit .spell of dioiight makes our river impassable for steal m-rs. The contractors ibl' tho AlcMindiii Public If-.1l lui\u commenced to
mako tt show to^iay, and I think, in common fairiiohb, thoy should strain every nerve to complete it by Chii.stm.is, considering that they wt>re not bound to time, and have had tho job in hand for some months ; of courae, tho excuse has always been want of timber. The Maori wheat at Kopua has been under water during the heavy freshes, but the owners say that it is not injured, in fact, rather benefited, and I hope it may bo so. Amongst other produce from the Maori country this last year has been a ton of very fine bacon, which has brought a high price in the Auckland market, and also some fat cattle. If our brown neighbours would turn their thoughts to something beyond pigs and potatoes it would be to their and our advantage. Some of our townsmen are trying hard to start a brickmaking company, and I have been shown specimens of clay exactly resembling the Rangiriri fire-clay, besides some very tough yellow clay. It is quite certain that with the difficulty of getting anything heavy in Summei*, by steamer, such an adventure deserves every assistance. I find more people prepared to throw cold water on the scheme than to help it through ; the bump of caution is too largely in the'inajor portion of our community.
