(To the Editor of tho Waik vro Tiurcs.) Sir, — In tho report upon tlio lato meeting of our member with his constituents nt Ohnupo, nothing pleased me more than to notice that Mr Mandeno had proposed tho toast of the locnl Press — it showed particularly <jood taste after the passage of .arms between you. I feel sure it must have beon as gratifying to you as it was unexpected. It certainly proves that Mr Mandeno can tako a liberal view of ones opinion?, even if they do not coincide with his own. — I am, &c, Absentke.
(To tho p:ailorof the Waikaio Tnrc3 ) Srit, — It appears that Rped and Brett intend start ins a paper in your district. Tins inu%t not be pleasant news for well-wishers of the WaiLato, if tho paper is to be conducted in the manner tho Star has been, for then every decent person must expect to be slandered, and the entire district degraded in the eyes of the public. Neither is it very complimentary to the people of Waikato to tell them that the men who are just about being driven out of Auckland on account of their slandering propensities are about to seek a refuge in Waikato. So diogusted are tho people in Auckland with the Star, thnt advertisements are withheld from it on principle, and I believe many advert semenn that appear are copied from tho morning papers without orders, aud even against the express desire of the advertisers Of course these are not paid for, but though not paid for, tbe advertisers would, without doubt, rather not see their names in that journal. This may give you nu idea of what is to become of thf> Star when another evening paper is printed here. If \ou think thnt any journal started under the auspices of Reed and Brett mil injure yours, you are greatly mistaken ; it will only tend to demonstrate to the inhabitants the value of a respectably conducted newspaper. — I am, &c., Hmcatok.
