WELLINGTON. Friday.
A letter published in the Christchurch Press this morning .states that, a man named It. K. M. Smyth had captured two live Moas'in Browning's Pass on September 27. Smyth also says, thai when near the top of the saddle of the mountain, his dogs suddenly set oft' at a' great pace 'and' commenced barking furiously ; he followed after them, and upon going a short distance, saw two large birds — one of gigantic hdight, the other smaller. SeeingthatiJae dogs were getting the worst of the fight, Smyth ran hack and cooed to his mate, after which they got a tether rope and got under tho shelter of a small \ patch of bush, got behind the larger bird, and roped it at first cast, when they took a turn roflnd the birch, tree with tho vope, contrary to their expectation, the large bird did not show fight to a,ny great extent, the small one was quietly captured, and after this had little trouble in securing the large bird and loft it fastened to the 'tree two days, the younger one making no effort to leave its mother. On tho following Thursday, with the assistance of Sampson's shepherds took the old bird to camp, the young one following. - The old > bird is eight feet high, and the young one five feet. The old bird appears reconciled to his captivity. Smyth intended starting for Cnristchurch on Thursday last.
