CORRESPONDENCE.

[We Jo not necessarily endorse the opinions expressed by our correspondents.]

(To the Editor of the Waikvto TniES.) Sir, — Although I am not a subscriber to your journal, yet I possess sufficient of that commodity i called Corinthian brass — an article by the way with which many are endowed in this country — to ask you to publish the following remarks, which as a ratepayer of the town of Raglan I may be excused for making. While in Raglan the other day, I could not help observing many cattle and horses which indeed eclipsed Pharoah's lean kine for thinness. As long as matters are allowed to remain as they are at present there will be no improvement. Perhaps I shall not be considered officious if I draw the attention of the chairman and members of the Town Board to the following paragraph taken from a Southern paper : — " In Picton a revenue of £80, and in Havelock £35 per year is derived from fees charged for depasturing horses in the grass-grown streets." The town rates do not amount to a very large sum ; as a means of increasing them, and also protecting the rights of the resident ratepayers, I would suggest that the present Board apply for po»ver to enforce the Dog Nuisance Act, and also those portions of the Auckland Waste Lands Act, 1874, as relate to the grazing of cattle on the waste lands and streets of the town. As the matter stands at present, any person can run whatever he likes in the township, whether- he is a ratepayer or not, — a state of things hardly fair on those who pay the pipor. It is to be hoped the Board will settle this matter at once, so as to enable those who pay rates to derive a little benefit for their coin. Ratepayer. Ptaglan, Sept. 21, 1874.
