IMMIGRATION EXPENSES.

The estimates to defray the salaiies, contingencies, and expenses of the Immigration Department, m connection with the Immigration and Pnblic Works Loan, for tho year 15745, were laid before the House by the Premier. For the intioduction and location of immigrants in the present year, £275,000 The Immigration Officer at Auckland is s-ct down at £800, and it la proposed to vote £SOOO for country depots in that province, aud £9000 for advances for works in connection with the location of settlers, including advances for cottages £9000— total for Auckland, £17*858. The salary ol the Immigration Officer at Taranaki is £100, and it is proposed to advance to the province, for depots and for works to assist settlement and the other purposes contemplated by the vote for Auckland, a sum of £20,000. The immigration officer at Canterbury is salaried with £400 ; his assistant has £200 ; his clerk, £180 ; und his messenger, £62 12s. The immigration officer at Timaru will have £125 ; and it is proposed to vote £8000 for depats &c , but nothing for advances to promote settlement. Canterbury having employed a portion ef her ample funds in that direction, and not requning the aid of the General Gowrumont. The total ior Canterbury is £9317. The immigration officov ior Otago is set down for £325 ; his two clerks £200 each; his cadet, £G0 ; ami tho visiting Fiirgeon, £50 ; £6000 is to be voted for country depots ; and tho province desires an advance of £10,000 on the terms pioposed by the Government in connection with the location of settlers, erection of cottages, &c. The total for Otajro la £17,395. There is also a tote to be proposed of £1200, as the moiety of the cost of four steam launches — one each for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin.
