THE SUEZ MAIL.

' ' The May mails, via Sun Francisco, due in London on June 26, were not delivered till July 6. The mails via Brindiai, due ii. London on July 6. were not delivered on that dar, owing to the Tanjore having been delayed- by th# monsoons". " It is expected the mails will be delivered on July 11. The Factories Bill, restricting the labour hours of women and children, has passed through committee. Sin- Wilfred Lawsons " Permissive Prohibitive Liquor Bill was rejected by 301 votes to 75 f The Pope has bestowed the apostolic benediction ou the Republican army of Spain. Fi\e hundred leading of Berlin held a .meeting to form a National '"Liberal Association. Mr C. Lewis's motion to abolish the income-tax was rejected by 139 rotes to 38. The revenue returns for the quarter excite some uneasiness. The receipts to June 30 were £17, 672,521, being £8,593 less than last '£eai\ A memorial praying for the removal of the electoral disabilities of women, bearing 1,800 signatures, was presented to the House of Commons by Mr Disraeli. A duplicate wals'sent also to Mr Gladstone. Don Carlos and the Princess Marguei'ita reviewed 18,000 mezi on the 3rd July. Figaro, La France, wcALe Soir have been fined for reproducing from American papers passages fiom Rochefort's letters. An intermit] onial .Sanatory Conference is sitting at Vienna to devise measures for preventing the spread' of (Sholera. • < * ! A strike of 18,000 colliers has taken place in ! Yorkshire and Derbyshire: | The Royal Geographical Society has conferred a } gold medal on Dr Schweinfurth, for his African explorations.' Mr Henry Stanley and Professor Goldwin Smith Inn c returned to America. ■ Northumberland House and its surroundings have been purchased by the Metropolitan Board of Works for .£497,000, for the formation of a wide street on its site. The summer manoeuvres at Aldershot have elicited warm commendations from military judges. Some of the militia regiments present almost equalled the regular troops in the-* precision of their evolutions. A sham light took place in the presence of the Queen. i The Cleveland strike has terminated by 9,000 ironstone miners accepting the masters' terms — 12J per cent, reduction of wages and 2d per ton on tonnage lates. Two thousand five hundred men have been discharged from the Llaaberris slate quarries for joining the union. Nearly 40,000 operatives at Belfast ha\e struck against 10 per cent reduction. Additional police are in town prepared for an emergency. On June 14, 14 horses ran for the Grand Piix de Pans.. The weather was superb, and the crowds were enormous. Trent's victory excited astonishment, and he was not cheered. At the inter-UiJversity Cricket Match, Oxford was victorious. Grave dissensions exist regarding the completion of St Paul's Cathedral. The Executive Committee have entrusted ths work to Mr Burgess, who proposes a style of ornamentation foreign to Sir .Christopher Wren's pkns. The Fine Arts Committee remonstrate, and utter strong protests against this violation of good faith. The House of Commons is ventilated by a new air machine. A Frenchman named Degoof succeeded in descending safely from a balloon by means of a flying machine. He went up from Cremorne Gardens, passed over the cit/, and descended near Brandon, Essex. In a second ascent, last night, Degroof was killed, owing to the failure of his plans. A duel between two Englishmen, one of whom was a member of Parliament, arising from a love dispute, was arranged to come off at Ostend, but the combatants veie arrested on board a steamer at Dover by . the authority of the Speaker of the House of Commons. A duel .has been fought on the Luxemburg frontier between two journalists, Mitchell and School (?). The latter received a sword thrust in the right wrist. Two othei'S have fought with pistols on the Swiss territory, with haimless results. The Isle of Wight will, this summer, be honored with the presence of Imperial visitors. The Crown Prince and Princess of Germany are staying at Sandown, and the Empress of Austria will reside incognita st Ventnor.
