MR POTTER AND THE CHEQUE. (To the Editor of the Waikato Times )

SiR, — I see by your issue of yesterday, that you are somewhat in n fog m reference to the cheque held by Mr Potter. I think I can help you out of the haze. The cheque in question was Mr S. S. Graham'i, paid for his road lates to the lato collector, E. Clark. The cheque was made payable to order. A dty or two after giving the cheque, Mr Urabam beard some unfavorable newt about Clarke, «nd went to Hamilton to see about the cheque ; he was also anxious to learn bow the Cambridge Board stood, being one of the trustees. The manager of the Nati >nal Bank, on Mr Grahiun going into the bank, asked him to alter the cheque made payable to Clarke, he said he had just come t» stop the cheque, but that he had no desire to do so, provided it was placed to the credit of the Board, (not naming the Board. The manager believing him to be a ratepayer in the Kirikiriroa district put the sum to the credit of that Board. Mr Graham found out the mistake during the day whilst in conversation with the manager, and asked him to iectify it. He replied " I Cannot," you must see Mr Totter, he rehised to rufund. Mr Graham reported the matter nt the. first meeting of the Cambaidge Board, and be and I were deputed to bee Mr Seddon the chairman of the Knikiriroa Board. We did so, and he quietly smoothed us down by telling us we were too late, and l.iid down any amount of law to us to prove the assertion. The law case'arose out of the above circumstances. — Your's <Lc., £ » James Euncjman. \ , Chairman Cambridge District Boiird*
