THE GIRL OF THE PERIOD.

By Joe Fekjjeoot.

~Noxr one would think that by their way Some folks were made of finer clay, Than other mortals. The reason is, I'm told, Bjcauso their wings are tinged with gold. Yon lady fair — with silken tram, Just mark her look of proud disdain ; Oh, who would think this him Isoino beauty Does make it now a daily duty, To fix herself (to use a purase), ice how she peers Into the glass — and oh lie, now gently smears Her face with subtle powders to impart A rosy bloom, a truly rosy art. Then note how now, with finished care, Is well arranged her auburn hair ; Sometimes a la chignon, then what they call A most becoming waterfall. Now comps a pencil — 'tis true, I vow. To darker tint, each arched eyebrow, And for brilliant sparkling eyes, Of bella donna just a drop she tries, Then donkey like, she soon does find, There's something wanting — Ah, » pannier behind! Oh that in these enlightened days, Our lady friends should have such foolish ways. All ready now for walking in the street, My lady trips along with mincing feet ; And to the figure more charms to lend, Observe the graceful Grecian bend 5 A walking-stick might be added too — Methiuks 'twould be the thing, and something new ; Although 'tis really a mosb wicked shame, For youlh to ape the aged and the lame, Old Time will soon enough be on their track, And cause a bend on every lady's bock. 'Tis folly's fashion now a-da^s To be absurd, and Miss obeys ; And as through the streets she walks, In accents loud hear how she talked. And wildly swings her arms about, Like some awkward country lout, And at other girls givea such a look That only other girls could brook. Miss at home, now Bpends her time Perusing novels, or scanning rhyme } And if perchance, meets with a verse — A little naughty — or even worse, I will not offend, but give a jest, Somehow that part — it seems the best j And lounging full length on the sofa, Behold ! a veritable lady loafer.
