(To the Editor of the Waikato Times.)

Sir,—ln ono of your lato issues I sco a communication from Captain Johnstpne relative to the Raglan and Waipa roads, and I entirely agree with his concluding remarks, that in such an important undertaking as this, every known line should bo exammoJ by a competent engineer before the lino of road is decided. I would, however, go a step further, sir, and urgo on tho part of our Government tho desirability .of offering a good substantial reward, open to Europeans or Maoris who shall be tho means of discovering the best lino to the Waipa river. I behevo it would be money well invested, as nlrendy the amount spent directly and indirectly on tho survey, examination, plans, &c. of different tracts (none of which, probably, will ever become the road,) must amount to no small item. The resident engineer in the Waikato, assisted by our local engineer, has just completed tho survey of what I understand to be the Aotea end of the Waipa road, and if he can be as successful in finding anything like so good a line at the Waipa end as ho has found hero I have not the least doubt Captain Johnstono will lire to sco tbo Eaglaa District progress even beyond his most sanguine expeuti.lions.—l am, &c, T. B. Hill Aotea, July 10,1874.
