WELLINGTON. Monday.
Alexander McDonald, the European representative of a Manawatu liapu, was sentenced this morning to three years penal servitude, this being the lowest sentence the Act allowed; but before being released, the prisoner is to find sureties for keeping the peace, himself in £500, and also two sureties for £50 each. The Judge, in a long speech, severely criticised the conduct of the prisoner. McDonald pleaded in defence that he only shot the horse to satisfy the natives, and so prevented something worse being done. But the Judge said, McLonald, in meeting Mr Young in a cordial manner, and endeavoring to obtain a passage in the coach ; failing that, he then deliberately shot the horse, and thereby stopped Her Majesty's mail; that conduct was both base and treacherous.
