TELEGRAPHIC. (From the Daily Southern Cross.) Napier, Tuesday.
There was a crowded meeting in the Council Chamber last night. A resolution was unanimously carried that the town of Napier be constituted a municipality. The Superintendent occupied the chair. "Wellington, Tuesday. Upwards of five thousand shares were taken up in the new Colonial Bank. It is expected that the whole of twenty thousand will be taken up as they are applied for freely in country districts, especially WanganuJ. A large^sale of merchandise was held this after noon by auction. The prices realised were :—: — Honolulu sugar, .£33 ; Mauritius, £42. Very large quantity of May's tea from Is lid to 2s 3d ; C.V.P. br.mdy, f>ls to 525 ; Hennessy's, 56s ; 1873 hops, GJ,d to 7d. A large line of hops was sold privately at 6d. Chi'istclmrcli, Tuesday Mr De Bourbell rejK>rts the sharemarket : — Buyers: National Insurance, 295 ; National Bank, .£3 ss ; South British, 48s; Shipping Company, Us ; Standard Insurance, 13s. Sellers: National Insurance, 30s ; National Bank, 66s 6d ; South British, f>os; Shipping Company, 15s; Standard Insurance, 14s 6d. In the Pro\ incial Council to-night Mr McKaskell will move that trains be run on all branches of the railway on Sunday. The Museum continues ts be visited by immense numbers of persons on Sunday. A meeting of the members of the Kaiapoi public library is called to eonaider the question of opening the library and reading-room on Sunday. Greymouth, Tuesday. The Tarara arrived off Hokitiki at 5 a.m. to-day, and was not tendered there, owing to no steamer being available. The came on here, and was tendered at 11 a.m., but the steamer could not return into port until 9 p.m.
