TELEGRAPHIC. (From the Daily Southern Cross.) Grahamstown, Tuesday.
A fatal accident occurred to-day about noon in the Pumping Association shaft, which resulted in. the immediate death of a very respectable young man named John 0. Pirritt. The deceased with three other men, Charles Tinge, William Boxall, and Robert Morrison, were at^the 220 feet level standing on staging. 'They were' at the time engaged in disconnecting the yokes of the hydraulic from around the HfC \ One of the hydraulic rods was attached to the yokes atthe time." The. top part of the rod was attached to the capstan rope by a chain. The chain broke aild r the yokes and rod fell down the shaft smash jug through the stage on which Pirritt and Tinge were" standing^ ' Pirritt fell down into the' shaft, but Tinge managed to sustain himself by extending his arms against the column and the main puinpirodj b,eingi particularly supported by a flange of the cblumn.iintil Le" was released. Wellington, Tuesday. The following tenders have been received for the formation, ballasting, and laying of a permanent way%} the Hiyerhead contract of the Kaipara railway. The tender of Daniel Walloon, of Auckland, £14,977, has been accepted. Th*e following were declined :— William 'Kirby, Auckland, £15,984 15s; Lackland and Welsh, Parnell, £16,853 2s 6d. Greymouth, Tuesday, The steamer Waipara, bound for Hokitika, wliile waiting to cross the bar early on the tide to-day, took the ground, on the south spit where she remained till evening. After high water she floated off, but drifted amongst the breakers southward, and was eventually di*iven> ashore on the south beach about half-a-mile from the river mouth. , The position of the vessel is a dangerous one as there is a heavy sea rolling along the shore. Dunedin, Tuesday. A slight shock of earthquake was felt at 17 minutes to 6 on Saturday inorhing. Port Chalmers, Tuesday. A case of crimping was tried to-day, and the defendant was acquitted because the Act only provides for persuasion, and the accused was proved to have only aided.
