A PRACTICAL YOUNG LADY.
A writbe in the Vie Parisienne is now publiining a, lerie* of sketcbei which, he claiirs, are faithful portraitures of American life. We translate a chapter, in which lie tellahow he yisited a young American lady to whom he had been preyiously introduced. One evening, lays he, I found Alice alone in the parlor. Her cousins had started out for a walk with their beau. I wai surprised to notice that the was not in her usual elegant toilette ; and when I asked the reason, she said she wa» warm and tired. ' Let us go to Hoboken,' I proposed. l The fresh air from, the w ater will do you good.' 'No ! ' she replied. ' Will you go out and take some roast oysters and a lobster salad ? ' ' No, I am not hungry,' ' Well, then,' I suggested, ' let us go to MftillfcrcFe and. hare an ice.' 1 No, I tell you,' she said. ' But wait ! if 1 should" go out with you, what would the whole affair cost you, including the supper, the theatre, and all the usual expenses ? ' ' I hardly know,' I answered ; ' besides, what difference does it make? It's of no importance. Come on, please, and. do not worry yourself about my purie.' ' Just listen to me,' said she ; ' you would spend about fifteen dollars. Now, nutead of going out, let us remain at home, and take a cup of tea, and you con give me the fifteen* dollars ! '
