At the Supreme Court, Banco sitting-, to-day, in the case of Eraser versus Reed and Brett, being an action for libel, Mr McCormack stated on behalf of the defendants that he would not oppose the making of the rule absolute. Kule granted. In the Provincial Council to-day, prior to prorogation, several bills, including the Highways Bill, passed the filial stages. It was agreed that the Council approve of the proposal in Superintendent's Message, .No. 73, relative to maintenance of main roads in Waikato district. Alexander Brown, the youth who gave information that he had seen a man man set fire to Hobson's Buildings, was arrested to-day on suspicion of being the perpetrator. The Provincial Council was prorogued to-day. The Superiiitendei-t in his speech said that immigration would have his special attention as regarded the superintendence of General Government immigration and the appointment, where necessary, of immigration agents for the province. In reference to the Education tax, he said as it is probable the imposition of taxation, direct or indirect, in this i olony must soon take place, he hesitated to give ti is consent on behalf of the Governor to measures which increase direct taxation in this province, lest it prejudice or embarass any action that may be taken by the Colonial Legislature towards equalizing the taxation of the country; embiacing, as such action no doubt will, provision for Educational requirements of the colony, without necessity for the imposition by the Provincial Legislatures of direct taxation upon '•ections of the community. He therefore reserved the Education Act for the expression of the Governor's pleasure. Sailed : Ladybird, s.s. Doctor Pollen was a passenger. Mr O'Rorke will leave for Wellington Saturday.

A telegram from the Aq-ent-General, dated 2nd June, states that during May the following immigrant ships were despatched for tlio colony: — Reichstag 1 and Sthrnthi-avur for Wellington, with 700 souls ; Caroniace. One of the late crew of the Chevart statos that when five days from Newcastle, a Tahitian fell into the sea through the rottenness of the rigging ; he swain after the vessel for half an hour, but although the passengers and crew entreated, no attempt was made to pick him up. The weather was fine- the wind light, and the veßsel going five knots at the time. The loss was not reported on arrival.

Wednesday. An important case in reference to the question of tbe inviolability of telegrams was brought before the Supreme Court, in Banco, to-day —Maoassey in behalf of G. Dodson, the plaintiff in the case against the Superintendent of OtagOi and others, obtained a rule nisi calling on the Superintendent and the Commissioner of Telegraphs to show cause why certain telegrams should not be produced by them at the trial of the case, and why he (Dodson) should not be allowed to inspect and take copies of the same.
