An enquiry as to the origin of tlie Queen street fire has been held. Kerahy, baker to Water?, who cleared the box m which the lire originated, said he supposed he had left some ashes in it and this had caused tho conflagration. Verdict— The fire was caused by the accidental ignition of a prooymg case, in tho management of which gross carelessness had been manifested. In the Provincial Council the interim report of the Gold Committee has been [presented, in which it is stnted that nothing important has resulted from the enquiry, and that further time was required to continue them during the recess. A message has been received from the Superintendent, acknowledging the receipt of a petition from the legal profession in favour of establishing a criminal reformatory for juveniles> requesting power to carry out this desirable object. A Bill to enable the erection of t> block of buildings on the old Supreme Court site has been read a first time. Considerable discussion has taken place in reference to grant of £1500 to Thames Municipality. An amendment by Shepherd, dissenting from the proposed grant, was carripd. A fire has taken place at Opotiki. The Wharf Hotel, 1 onus's store, and Faher'i store. Insurances— New Zealand o'ttce. £1050 ; National, £250. The following additional estimates have been brought down :— Criminal Reformatory for Juveniles £500; Inspection under Public Lealth Act £600.
