AUCKLAND. Monday.

Referring to the remai'ks made by the Thames Advertiser with reference to land purchases at the Upper Thames, a contemporary writes the following : — " It appears that the supposed discovery is a ' mare's neBt,' the purchases out of which so much capital is being made having been of long standing. The facts are that in February, 1873, Major Green arranged with Ally, of Hikutaia, to have a shave in the lands he had obtained from the natives previous to that date. In March, 1873, he also promised to use his influence in obtaining a portion of the Hungahunga block for him (Green), but when this was mentioned to Mr Mackay, about the end of last April, he informed Major Green that he could not obtain this block, as it would be purchased for Government. Since then all applications from an agent named Nicholls have been sent to Mr Mackay to be dealt with, as he intended purchasing for the Government." The Suez mail was placed aboard the Ladybird to-day, and should be in Auckland in about a week. At an inquest held on the body of Thomas Taylor at the Provincial Hospital, it was shewn that while deceased, who was crippled and partly blind, was seeking food on board tfce P.C.E, he had tumbled down the hatchway. A verdict of Accidental Death was returned. Sailed — City of Adelaide, with the San Francisco mails, and 25 saloon and 17 steerage paRsengers. It is expected that the Provincial Council will end its session to-night.
