3n our last issue we allnded to the disappearance of Purukutu, and sugge.-ted that his absence from Ktfyi might portend trouble. As all leaders of our journal are aware, we do not conduct what is termed a hensatiou.il paper, and we have careiii'iy avoided giving currency to native nonsense* Wu have endeavoured to keep ourselves uncoutamiluiied by an atmosphere redolent with lies which nl' biedthe who live in a native district. Had the iv|>oit ot his disappearance from Kuiti, and the anxiety of Tawhiao on that acecou'it, leached us ivum one source only, we should not have attached the slightest importance to it, but the intelligence having been telegraphed to us through tbo usual channel of our telegraphic information, and coniiniitd by a conespondent generally reliable, we believed that the fellow had disappeared and drew rondusious us to the probable results, of which we £ii\r ■ i,ur reailers the benefit. Under the circunipU>; ces, we ft et that no apology for having helped to ceute a little excitement is nvcessary. It is rlearly our duly, when mischief nuiy possibly be brewing, to wHrn those likely to Bufl'ei. We may Jiave misled, but our error was on the right side, i'ui'ukutu has returned to his usual place of abode.

The vucui cy is likely to excite a. contest, as there are three candidates .spoken of already, viz, Mr W. L Rees, Mr Dargaville, and Mr P. Pmllip*. The followu q is the division list on the second reading of the Appropt Kttion Hill : — Ayes>, 2-1 : Baguall, Beveridge, Boylan, Urovvu, Byion, Cadnun, Carpener, Chee«em«ia, Crispe, Di^uau, G.aham, Johnstone, Kelly, MoLeod, M»ms, Philips, Piiuie, Ueed, Koche, Sheehan, Swauson, lay lor, TonLs, and Wilson. The Western Star ut Kiverton, bouthland, states that on Thursday. Mr J. R Watson, while walking on the beach found five cows lying dead under a large red pino t er. The annuals weio lying hudled together, and had evidently been killed by lightning on the evening of Weducsdiy, the 16th inst Ihe tite was niatked as if it had been struck The cittle wcie maiked iv an zigzag manner from the flanK to the shoulder, as if they had been seared with a hot iron We hear that two head of cattle were albo destroyed by lightning at Orepuki. A match which eicited a great deal of interest took place nt Hamilton on Saturday last. The competitors were Dclanev (a member of Llie Armed Constabulary), and Autridge, n Volunteer Militiaman. The distance was one hundred jards, and the stakes £10 a-»ide. Delaney is a man whose performances ure well known. He first came out to Australia in 1871. where he ran Austin a distance of 5 miles in 28 minutes 13 seconds, winning £50. On his arrival in New Zealand he ran the celebrated J. 0-. Harris a distance- of 100 j aids for money, receiving 5 yards start. In this race he c.nne in an eajy winner by 10 yards. These and other equally meritorious pei formances justly entitled Delaney to public support ; and the betting was consequently three to two and later on, two to one in favor of Delaney. Autridge is comparatively unknown, although it is reported that lie has been Biicu'ssful as a pedestrian on the Wangauui and Paleu side. The start was iixed ior four o'clock, but at ten minutes to four the competitors prepared for notion, and it was agreed to commence proceedings. Several delays occurred owing to the pistol used by the starter missing fire, but at 44a splendid start was ellccted. For fhe first twenty yards both compel it ors were exactly abienst, but Delaney gradually drew a-head, was ever challenged, and won easily by two yards and a half. We understand that a challenge winch appealed in our adveitising columns by Deluney to run any man in Ihe Waikato district any distance from 100 to 410 yards for £l 0 to £50 nside, still remains good; and further, tbat any ambitious pedestrmn can be accommodated up to 10 miles. We hear it rumored that Mr E. OHara, of Auckland, lias foi winded a challenge to Delaney to run three distances — 200,300 and 410 j aids ior 150, which ofler is now under consideration. The locus in quo will bo the Waikato district. The follow ing hare been appointed to be interpreters under the 12th section of the Nutnr Lands Act, 1873 : — JC. Young, Esq , Shortland ; C. O.
