lodge, Wellington, Thursday. In tbe General Synod, the Bishop of Nelson moved, " That a select committee be appointed to report on the supply of candidates for the ministry there training, &c." The Bishop of Dunedin seconded this, on the ground that the time was not far distant when tho supply of clergy from England would practically cense. The motion was agreed to. Archdeacon Harper's motion, regarding the independence of the Church of "New Zealand, namely, that, the Q-cneral Synod shall hare power to make such alterations in tbe services and ceremonies of the Church in Now Zealand as its circumstonces require, was also moved. Amendments by the Bishops of Nelson and Wellington led to several discussions. Ulimately it was decided to appoint, as a select committee, tho Bisbops of Nelson, Wellington, and Waiapu, tho Dean of Christchnrcb, Archdeacon Harper, the Eev Messrs Burrows, E. C. Quick, Hunter, and Bronswell, to report upon the expediency of adopting Archdeacon Harper's motiou, and upon the advisability of making alterations in the name of formularies of the Cb.ur.eb. of England in New Zealand; the report to be brought up on Tuesday. An announcement baa been made by the Superintendent of Taranaki regarding Vogel's circular on free immigration. He did not state the ease fairly on the premises. Tbe circular to the Superintendents of provinces: stated that the Government were considering the propriety of abolishing free immigration, excepting in regard to single women and nominated immigrants. All others were to be required to give promissory notes to tbe amount of seven pounds. Before the question is finally decided, Superintendents are requested to express theii opinions on the proposed change. The Superintendent of Wellington has written to the effect that he sees no reason fcr a change of system. He is perfectly satirfied with the immigrants already imported, all of whom are readily absorbed into the population. In the Taranaki Provincial Council yesterday, Major Atkinson supplemented the statement he made the previous day. He said tbe Executive only acted as the advisers of the Superintendent, and were responsible to the Council. He would make a statement of policy on Friday. In the meantime formal business would be proceeded with. A motion was made havng for its object the abolishment of militia parades. It was withdrawn on the understanding that the Government would attend to tho matter.

Dunprlin, Thursday. There is to be a meeting of the licensed victuallers, brewers, and wtno nnd spirit merchants to-morrow, to consider the Licensing Act of 1873. Great dissatisfaction has been expressed on judgments in the Rcsirlent Magistrate's Court on licensing matteis. It is rumoured that a petition will be got up praying for Bathgate's removal or suspension, ho having refused licenses. The Assembly is to be memorialised on tho subject.
