Petitions were received by the Provincial Council to-day, praying 1 aid for their schools. Mr Sheehan stated that Mr Mackay was protecting the interests of the Government against private land speculators at the Upper Thames. A return of all money expended at the Thames and Coromandel goldfields, specifying purposes on which expended, was moved for by Mr Swan. Agreed to. A desultory discussion ensued on the Education Bill. Messrs Reid, Sheehan and Dargaville expressed themselves favorable to a property tax. The discussion was proceeding at time of adjournment for dinner. Arrived — Taranaki, with Suez mail. Saunders reports sales: National Insurance, 30s ; City of London, 23s Gd ; El Dorado, 4s. Buyers : Bank of New Zealand, 3455 ; Caledonian, 202s Gd ; Van, 112s 6d ; Beach, 17s Gd ; Thames, 70s.
