Wellington, Tuesday. The Provincial Council is prorogued. Napier, Tuesday. Michael Lyell was killed by being crushed between the steamers Patterson and Pretty Jane, as the latter was coming alongside the wharf. The deceased, and another man who was hurt seriously, were in the pilot-boat.
New Plymouth, Tuesday. The Superintendent in Council yesterday, read a telegram from Mr Vogel, stating that it wai proposed to stop free immigration except to nominated immigrants. Mr Carrington replied that he thought till this province had an equal share with the other provinces, free immigration should not bo stopped, and requested the Government to cause the same number that had been sent to Napier to be forwarded to Taranaki. No immigrants have as yet been sent here, and there is a great cry for labour.
Christchurch, Tuesday. His Excellency Governor DuCane, of Tasmania, arrived here on Saturday evening. Alter slopping a few days he will prooecd to Dunedin.
( Westporfc, Tuesday. Mr O Conor was elected to the Provincial Council without opposition.
Dunedin, Tuesday. Two aerei of reclaimed land, with a frontage to the harbor, were sold by auction to-day for £18,720. Some of the sections were bought by a iirin of iron founders and shipbuilders. The Eev Dr Stuart and Mr llutton have been appointed to confer with the New Zealand University Council. Yestcrdnv after the report containing the account of the proceedings at the conference was read, a resolution was proposed that this Council regreU that the deputation to the C-'ouncil of tho Now Zealand University should have have applied for affiliation without previously reporting to this Council the result of the mission. The following amendment was carried:—That the report be received, approved, and adopted. The Provincial Government propose to apply to the General Assembly for a loan of £5000, to conclude the o«maru harbor works.
