PUBLIC MEETING AT HARAPEPE. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

A. ruBi,TC meetino was held at Hampepe on the evening of the 2Uth April. The object of the meeting was to see what steps should be taken in regard to the action of the Government in not giving the men of Yon Tempsky's corps the promised allowance for timber. Mr Robert Neil was voted to the chair. The chairman stated that it having come to his knowledge that the men of Major Jackson's corps had received their timber allowance iome months past, and that it appeared evident that the Government intended to shirk giving ua ours, he thought that some steps should be taken to enquire into the subject ; this the mooting agreed to, and after some speaking on the affair, it was finally settled that the officer resident in the district writs to Major Jackson for full particulars, and on receipt of the same another meeting be held. A vote of thanks was passed to the chairman and the meeting diss rived. If it is the intention of the Government to withhold the said allowance from the men of the late Major Yon Tempsky's corps, making them an exception to all others, it is an act of the most glaring injustice.
