Hokitika, Thursday. In the Supreme Court the leoond jury in H&yo'i c«o, found a vertlict of guilty Into lust night. The prisoner* were sentenced to-day, James Hayes to two years, and John Hayes to six montln impriuounient. Tho latter was recommended to mercy. The charge of gold robbery against Jainet Hayei has been abandoned.

Dunedin, Thursday. Cbrittchurcb, Thursday. Tho Maori meeting at Kaiapoi commenced yesterday. There were 500 male Maoris present, including visitors from all parts of the Middle Island. A large present of food was made to the visitor* by tho Kampoi Mtorii. George Grey Tainroa, M 11. R., opened the proceedings in condemning the action of t lie Government towards the Maoris m this Island, and stiitl the following, vreire the objects of the meeting :—: — I. To inquire in what particular* the piu chase bj the Government of Waipounsnui was wrong. 2. To inquire whether tho promises regarding the school*, hospital*, and other promises or which rhe Maoris were induced to sell have been fulfilled. 3. How much money shall bo paid, or how much land returned by the Government in the fulfilment of their promises. 1. To taku tht opinion of the meeting upon the question whether they approve of the demand made by George Grey Taiaroa, in Parliament in the year 1873, for £2,000,000 compensation for tho unfulfilled claim* of this island. 5. To inquire at to the rental arising from the reserves rstaintd in the hands of tho Government or leased by tlien>. 6.
