CRICKET. AUCKLAND Y. WAIKATO. (From the New Zealand Herald.)
The return matoh, Auckland Cricket Club r. Waikato Cricket, Club, came off" at Ellershe yesterday. Thero was jiot u numerous utteiulauce o( spectators, but those who were preient fully «p|jreciated Ibe linely played and keenly contested game. Mi- Bennett acted as captain of the Auokland, and Mr A. E. Cox ol the Waikatu tetin. Meesw Lcpßett and Toleson '.performed the duties of umpires, and Messrs '1. F. Land*, and Pittinuii kept the scorei. The wickets were pitched sltoctlv alter ]1' a.m.. and the .Auckland team took the innings. The play on. both sides wav unex eepuonaliy good. 'Jhu Gelding was so smart mid the bowling so swift and true, I nut it" wuw a most difficult matter to obtam run", and the batsman had to \>h\y with tMieme caution. In thu first innings tbe Auckland t'e»nr made sfi runs, and thfr Wnikatos 55 ; Auekhwder* winning the first innjnßS by one run. In the second inning* th« Aueklanders made a score of 39 runs, but tiuio was called wjnui three ol tl.eir opponent's wickfts wei-e down in the second innings The tbieo wickets fell for 18 runs with 22 to tie. The probability is that had tko game been played out the Waikato men would have won by one or two wickets, but the uncertain nature of the game makes this merely a question o' opinion. However, both sides acpuitted themselves so well that defeat on either side would not hate been discreditable It would hare been more encouraging to the vititora had they been ablo to play the match out.
