PAPER MADE FROM JUTE. (From the Dundee Advertiser, 13th September, 1873.)
Thk whole of to-day's impression of. the Dundee, Advertiser - is printed on paper made entirely of Calcutta-jute-cuttings. The makers — Messrs William Tod, Jan., and Co., of Springfield Paper-mills, Lasswade, — report their views upon it as follows : — " It is an excellent paper, but nob quite so bright in colour as we could have wished — more resembling in this respect the colour of paper supplied to print second-class i books. We intend trying again — to have a parcel of paper I made of a good bright colour. The paper we have made is, I however, very tough, splendid in every respect for the news* paper trade." We may also add that for newspaper purposes its colour is quite fine enough. We are indebted to Messrs Tod for the trouble they have taken in advancing the manufacture of jute paper by producing so very satisfactory a sample Although no offers hard reached us in terms of the announcement we made three months ago, we are gratified to find that we hare succeeded in our principal object — the direction of the attention of paper-mak«ri to jute as a material of practically unlimited supply. Th« price, too, at which even now good jute paper can.be made is such as to relieve large consume™ from any serious apprehension as to the cost of paper in the future advancing beyond rates they will be able to meet. Paper-makers are no longer dependent either on rags or cotton-waste or esparto for material. The cost of bleaching jute for paper-making at present it considerable, but inventions are now being applied to jute for manufacturing purposes which, it is believed, will be equally applicable to pulp, and will both greatly expedite and reduce the cost of bleaching. It may now be regarded as oertain that jute will be more and more used as a material for paper-making, either alone or mixed with other materials commonly used — the certainty and abundance of its snpply being greatly in its favour compared with a fibre subject to so many irregularities as the supply of esparto has been of late. [I he above is worthy the notice of all interested in flax, preparation. Experiments recently made in Auckland prove that excellent pulp can bo made from, the- tow and refuse of our flax-mills.]
