An enquiry into the wreck of the Surat has commenced before Mr Strode, K.M., Janiei Fulton, H.M., (Japt. Thompson, and nautical asseisors. Mr|llaggit conducted the caao on behalf of the Customs. Mr Stout appeared for Captain Johnston. The captain's and first and second mates' certificates were handed into Court. The captain was the first witness examined as to the value of ship and cargo. He stated that the iron of the ship wa» worth £15,000,^ and that when she struck the weather was very hazy. There were five bumps during the first hour; she then made no water. At &in the uiornrng she was making water rapidly ; he attributed the loss of the vessel to an error in judgment. The witness had drunk something after the vessel atruck, he declined to say how much. Ho had a pistol in his pocket, and threatened to shoot any person who attempted to lw>Ut a signal without orders. He did not see the mate use a revolver. The enquiry will probably laat a week.
