REED AND BRETT S AUCKLAND ALMANAC FOE 18 7 4.
THE Publishers beg leave to announce tho appronrlung publication of the second number of this Almanac. In doing so they desire to express their extreme gratification and gratitude for the unexpected reception accorded to the tirst issue In submitting to the leMclentsof tho province the fiist number of what the*, were determined to ultimately make a household necessity, they had calculated on meeting with a certain amount of apsit ln, and incurring no lUeonsidenihle loss ; and in printim*; 2,000 copies of the Almanac tliey had expected that at least a tliousiind Mould leuidiu on hand to b: given away gratuitously It hu*, therefoic with surprise they found before the halt of the first month ol the year had passed that every copy, had been sold, and that oiders were pouring in from all their ugents requiring almost an equal number to that already supplied, a demand which it was lound impossible then to meet owing to the type having been distributed. Instead also of a pecuniary loss it was found that there had resulted a very considerable piofit on the tirst issue. Knconraged by such results the publishers Imve no longer hesitancy as to the extent to which they may venture in the endeavour to make ( her annual an unrivalled hand book for thepiounco, and they are resolved that the coming number will far ex^-el i*s piedecessor. It is not their purpose to indicate the severul points of excellence that will chaiacterise their Almanac for 1871 Suffice it to my that through their agents, enquiries by eoi re-poi.dents, and a specnl commissioner proceeding through the various settl uunts, the information respecting the several districts will be ot the most extensive and exhaustive character, while >uiided by past experience the publishers have ma.le provision lor the supply ot any additional demand for the publication that is likely to arise. As the agencies of the Evening 6tar, which will be agencies for the Almanac, are now extended all over the province, the distribution of the issue will be prompt and general; and as it is not the ob ji*et of the pitbl sliera to make any pecuniary profit b g v the transaciion, but only to produce that which will be beneficial lo the province, interesting and usi-lul to the public* nnd indicative to their own enterprise, they confidently lely on even an mciease in the cordial and substantial encouragement atibrded to the first edition.
