WELLINGTON. Friday. MossrsShcehan and Takamoana gavo a dinner lait night to thirty influential native chiefs from various parts of the colony. Several members of the Parliament and other gentlemen were present. The Wellington liiflo Association will send two representa tivpj to the intercolonial contest at Melbourne. A committee ho» been appointed to select representatives. Subscription lists opened ! £ 50 already collected. At the Wanganui lnnd sale to-dty country lands sold at £4 15s to £20 per acre; town sections, £54 to £395 per quarter acre. There is a strong feeling among newspaper people in n» Brogden's telegraphic agency. Steps are being taken to supersede the Association and start an efficient •erriee. It is felt that Brogden has too much power in the country and the House. Mr Reed goes to Dunedin to see Mr Bell, to ascertain what can be done for evening papers against the present division of telegraphic communication.

Dunedin, Friday. The oriminal sessions commence on Monday. There are onlj nine cases for trial. The committee appointed to report on the question of improving the harbour have issued a preliminary report. It is th<. lr opinion that the w ork is desirable, and that it can easily be effected so that all manner of ships may come right up to Dunedin from the Heads ; and that such pressure should be brought to bear on the Government to induce them to carry out the plans proposed.
