[advektisemknt.] CRAIG Y. MACFARLANE. To the Editor of the New Zealand Hkahald. SIR. — In giving my evidmcr in the Supreme Court, on Monday last, to Mr Hebketh's questions, I said to him, "You and your firm hate dono all jou could to nun me by keeping the deeds of my wife's property in your office for over one \car and nine months without registration, aud by convening tlio bi<<t portion to J. S. Macfurlane without my knowledge." Mr HesketJi denied it, and challenged me to prove it. I accept the challenge with all my heart. The particulars arc as follow : — On the 20th May, 1870, Mr Lascclles, solicitor, made out a deed, at my request, conveying four farms to my wife, Sarah Craig, when I was all right und out of debt and worth over £20,000 all olear. 1 signed the deed in Mr Lascelles' office on the 27th May, 1870, in the presence of Mr J. Buitt, as trustee. Mr Lascclles having to go to the Thames to manage Mr R. Graham's estate, called with me atMessrs Hesketh and Richmond's office, about the beginning of June, 1870, and handed Mr Richmond the deed, in my presence, saying, "I have searched the Registry Office and found all correct ; you have nothmg to do but register them." I went to iho ftpgutry Office yesterday, and had the deeds in my hand, and found they wer« not registered till the 27th March, 1872— just one 3 ear and ten months to a day. In the month of March, 1872, my son, Hugh Craig, when he saw how things were going to ruin, asked his mother how much property she had. She replied, " I have the two allotments corner of Grahame and Hardinge streets, conveyed to me in 1860, and the farms at Tauranga." He said, "Are you sure?" His mother replied, "Your father conveyed them to me." Hugli Craip made enquiries in March 1872, and found the farms were not registered. He enquired (In k.v-mii Mr Richmond S.WM, ' I tuve no money." Hugh Lriiif I here and then gave him !T> 1 have Mr Richmond's -ci'ipt for the same. To t-hou t lie untrutbfulncu of Mr 1? chmond'h reply. I state, and can j.mve, ho received in c-.ibh C7iM\ the month of June, 1870, viz , from a native called Rc-hia, half-brother to tho, late Wjlham Thompson, Native King, £50 ; 30th June, cheque Bauk of New Zealand, £20 ; Kith July, ditto, ditto, £25 ; Bth September, d'tto, ditto, £21—in all £119. Let the public understand that I si«ned an agreement about the 12th July, 1870, written by Mr Richmond, and signed in his office, and registered in the Supreme Court. From that date lam held harmless from all law expenses whatever relating to the Wangapoa law case. Tins is tho deed referred to when I was convoying in trust to Mr J. S. Macfarlane about thirty farms on the East Coast Tuurnnga district, along with about four thousand acrci timber land. It was in this deed that the best part of n f y w ife's property wa* improperly included. Among so many deeds I did not notice this one. This is the farm that the generous, liberal, and open-minded gentleman, Mr J. S. Macfarlane, convened to my wife (her own property), when he was compelled by another solicitor. This is the farm that he has boasted of so much to his friends of what he has done, and told Mrs Craig, in his own office, he thought he had done enough for tho Craig family. There are°more matters 1 will refer to, and mention them in connection with Mr Richmond's ofijeo. When I was about to sign the largo deed referred to, 12th July, 1870, I think about thirty to forty pagos, it stated it was a bona fide sale. I objected to sign it, and took it away for about two days. I showed it to Mr J. Burtt. He said, " You must not sign it in that form." Mr Burtt went with me to Mr Richmond's office. I then said, "I will not sign it in that form." Mr Richmond replied (or words to this effect), "As the deed is done sign it ; we all know and understand that it is by way of trust : and when you can pay Mr J. S. Macfarlane you will get back your property. I will give you v. letter to this effect, signed by Mr J. S. Macfarlane." I signed the deed, but to this day I have received no such letter. Often has Mr Richmond and Mr Thomas MacffarUiie said I ucver would have back the mill. lam satisfied that was intended. Let your readers judge. There arc many moic matters like this, but I will not touch on them rt t present. All I want from Mr J. S. Macfarlane is—and I h.ive demanded it twice through the Snpreme Court — .> tjue. account of the books, according to the agreement bigned and registered in the Supreme Court, and I will >>ay him the balance, if any. THOMAS PRAIG. July 13, 1873.
