[iDVFRTISEMINT.] CRAIG Y. MACFARLANE. To the Editor of the New Zealand Hbabald. SIR, — In giving my evidence in the Supreme Court, on Monday last, to Mr Hisketh's questions, I said to him, " You and your firm have done all "you eou'd to rui l me by keeping the deeds of iu\ wife's property in your oSiee for over one year and nine months without registration, and by conveying the best portion to J. S. Macfarlane without my knowledge." Mr Hesketh denied it, ana rhallenged me to prove it. I accept the challenge with all my heart. The particulars are as follow : — ' On the 20th May, 1870, Mr Lascelles, solicitor, made out a deed, at my request, conveying four farms to my wife, Sarah Craig, when I was all right and out of debt and worth over £20,000 all clear. 1 signed the deed in Mr Lascelles' office on the 27th May, 1870, in the piesence of Mr J. Burtt, as trustee. Mr Lascelles having to go to the Thames to manage Mr R. Graham's estate, called with me at Messrs Hesketh and Richmond's office, about the beginning of June, 1870, and handed Mr Richmond the deed, ia my presence, saying, " I have searched the Kegistiy Office and found all correct ; you have nothing lo do but register them." I went to the Registiy Office yesterday, and had the deeds in my hand, and found they were not registered till the 27th March, 187 — just one year and ten months to a day. In the month of March, 1872, my son, Hugh Craig, when he saw how thin o s weie going to mm, asked hia mother how much pioneity she had. She replied, " I have the (wo allotm its corner of Grahatne andHardinge streets, conveyed to me in 1866, and the favms at Tauranga." He said, " Are you suie ?" his molhe> replied, " sfour father conveyed them to me." Hugh Craig made enquii ies in March 1872, and found the faims were not registered. He enquired the reajon. Mr Richmond said, " I h^ve no money." Hugh Craig there and then ga?e I'm £5. I uave Mr Richmond's receipt for the same. To show the unt. uthfulness ot' Mr Richmond's reply, I state, and can prove, he .eseived in cash £70 in the month of June, 1870, viz., i.-om a na( ive called Rehia, half-brother to the late William Thompson, Native King, £50 ; 30th June, cheque Bank of New Zealand, £20 ; 16th July, difx), ditto, £25; Bth September, di'to, ditto, £24— in all £119. Let the public undei-s'ancl that I signed an agreement about the 12th Jr'y, 1870, written by Mr Richmond, and signed in his office, and registe> ed in the Supreme Court. Prom that date lam held harmless fiom all law expenses whatever relating to the Waagapoa law case. This is the deed refeiTed to when I ivas lonveying in tiust to Mr J. S. Macfarlane about thirty farms on the l>st Coast Tauranga district, along with about four thousand acre* timber land. It was in this deed that the best part of my wife's property was iwp, one^y i ci v' v\ Among so many deeds I did not notice this one. This is the farm that the generous, liberal, and open-minded gentleman, Mr J. S. Macfarlane, conveyed to my wite (her own property), when he was compelled by another solicitor. This is the faim that he has boasted of &o much to his mends of what he has done, and told Mrs d'aig, in his own ollice, he thought he had done enough for the Craig family. There are" more matters I will refer to, and mention them in connection with Mr Richmond's office. When I wai about to sign the la.ge deed leferred to, 12th July, 1870, I tbidk abouc thhlyto forty pages, it stated it v ■; a bo/>a fide sa'e. I objected to sign it, and took it away i'or about two days. I showed it to Mr J. Bui! u. He be id. " V r ou must iiofc si o n it in th^t fo m." Mr Burtt went with me to Mr Richmond's oflke. I then said, " I will not s.gn it in that form." Mr Richmond replied (or wo/us io this effect), "As the deed is done sign iv ; we all L.now anr 1 understand that it hby w.<,y of trust : aad when you ran pay Mr J. S. Macf aria ne you w'U get back your piope- fey. I will give you a letter to this effect, signed by Air J. S. MpcLxiane." I signed the deed, buo to this d^y I Lave received no such let er. Often hrs Mr Richmond and Mr Ti'.omas Mactf.irlane baid I never would have back the mill. lam satisfied that was intended. Let your reade & judge. Theie are many more matters like this, but 1 will not touch on them at piejent. All I want fiom Mr J. S. MacLrlane i«— and I have demanded it twee thj ough the Supreme Court — a tme account of the books, according to the agreement signed ?nd registeicl "n the Supreme Couit, and I will ti^y bim tie bJance, * f sny.
