Nrcw Use for Watee.— -A coptruonce that has been erected at a colonial foundry, says the Adelaide Obseroer, h worthy of notice At present it \s only used for^blowing the ordinary blacksmith's fire, but ev.ulfntjjii.will.tip doubt, bo used for the stnolting-furnace. It consists of-an empty barrel, or quarter-cask, stood on, end behind* the fire to the centre of wjiieh a blast-pipe, from, two to three inches in diameter, is fixed. Qp Iho top of the ca?fe is another pipe, the same size 03 the bla-^t-pipe, some stx.fcet m height, with a funnel-shaped top. Just above this there 13 a horizontal water-pipe of the ordinary service sizp, with anozric, having an aperature of i inch diameter, fixed at riglit angles — that is, pointing down the pipa leading to the barrel, down whicb there riphes with considerable force, a tiny jet of wat"r, which causes a rush through the blast-pipe that is far superior both in, power and steadiness, to any that can bo. obtained from. the common blacksmitq's bellows. The waste water, which is very limited in quantity, escapes through a pipe attached for the purpose to the bottom of tho barrel. "TiNXiNtt" 11Y Electricity —A new and important process of " tinning " by electricity has been brought into successful operation in Birmingham. By this process any metal, it appear*, but ?ine, can be coated with a very white metal of great brilliiuyiy, of which tin forms the principal clemont. The precipitation is effected as in the electrotype j process. It is the intention of tho company to tin in this ' way plates of iron and stpel, and to me it a3 the layer upon which iiivormay be deposited, so that in ornamei tal articles, if the silver .ne&r off, a. pure white surface may bo presented to the eye. Comparative Fhooukss op Nkw Zealand— Tn a leading artielo on tho progress made bv New Zoahnd, the Sydney Morning Herald says — " On" comparing the figures givan.abpve,, it vfilt be seen that tho gold export from New Zealand is considcrablv moro valuable than tho wool export There is at lea«t a mill ton *torli«i» in favour of the gold In Now South Wales, on, the contrary, the wool is four timts the vaiuo of tho gold, and tho production of the latter would havo to increase enormously to bring it nbreast of t,h,c former. TLi» is a not unimportant distinction, because- though New Zealand lms rushed ahead -at a greater proportionate rato than Now South "Wales, it has done so in \irtue of op industry, wl.ich is, to some extent precarious, while the latter, though advancing more slowly, has done so in virtue of nn in lust i»y whinh is aa solid and and a* enduring as any productive 'ndustry can well be so long as the human race remains in ne<«d of clothing. Now Zealand to counterbalance its nrosperity, has hid tho drawbacks of a native war, nnd the effect of this is vorp visible, in its debt. This amounts now to nine millions sterling, which, fpr a population of 270,J(K), is heavier proportional debt than in any other of tho Australian polonies. Tio annnnl chnrgr on the colony for the interest and sinkmg fund is £550,000. The gross revenue of the colony is a lifctle.pver a million and a quarter, and tho Customs revenue, which is (lie real pressure of tajation, is in-arry three-qiurters o,f \ mlhon, which, for a population of a little over a quarter of a million, is about £3 per head. The taxation through the Cuatoins, thcruforc, is fiffv per cent, heavier than Now South Wale 3." In Auckland, according to the Herald, opthalmia is moro prevalent than in any other part of the world. Messrs llimiqm k and Sivh' Ploughs. — Tho Iro.tmonq J of N,ovembor, 1872, says • — Messrs Ransom, Sims, ond lfead have boon fortunate in their ploughing matches again this year, as we learn that at a match on the 30th iilt , nt Wjke, near Leeds, they won a silver cup worth £10 This competition was for manufacturers ur their acronts, and in the. co,tv tost with thorn were Mecsrs Oooke of Lincoln, and Fowler of Leeds. On tho sanv* day at Talgarth, Breconshiro, tho first all-comer's prize to the betf ploughman with the double plough was carried oil' by a locil man, w ith one of tho plouglu of this firm ; while on the 29th ult , at the Wilts' Ploughing Match, tho manager of their double furrow ploush won a silver cup presented by Sir C. P. Ilobliouse, Bnrt On tho s.ime day at the Worksop Nottinghamshire Ploughirg Mitch, the fir«t a'J-min.ors prize wns awarded to the best ploughman with one of their Rouble furrow ploughs. The Russian, government is reported to be about making a contract with a American firm for siipplving Sharpc's latest modol of carbine 111 lar^e nuuibero, with which to rc-arin the Cossack cavalry and tho dragoons. Tho winding chain of 11 coal mine at Dawley broke while in u*f, and eight men who were bumg lowerod were pro* v.p:UJjd to tbc bofciwa U \,\i-j z,zi LiU.'d.
