Steps Laving been tiV^n to encourage ami incrensc the prow tn of Hat in the colony of Victoria, it i» the intention of the Department of Agriculture :—l.: — 1. To insert an advertisement m the public papers calling for applications from persons desirous of engaging in Us cultivation, «uoh applications to be accompanied by a description of tho soil and situation, including proximity to suitable water, &c. 2. To such applicants as may bo selected by tho department seod will be supplied gratuitously, but in such quantity only as may be considered expedient by the Minister of Agriculture. 3 The seed will be accompanied by detailed inform»tion regarding tho most approved systems of cultivation, or preparation of the fibre for market. 4 With a tiow to establish the industry, the department intends to grant bonuses to those growers or cultivators who prbduco the most marketable samples of fibve ; quantity to be taken into consideration; such award to be made subject to tho following conditions. 5. Eocipients of seed will be required to forward to the department a given quantity of fibre prepared for market ; quantity to be «tnted in advertisement, such being a representative sample of tho total produced, and to bo grown from the seed supplied. 6 'Ihe above-mentioned samples will be duly catalogued and submitted to classification, after which tiiev will bo publicly sold, and tho decision of the judges, takon in conjunction with the' other circumstances, will regulate the amount of tho bonus and awards. 7. Th»num realised by tho above mentioned sal« will bo handed over to tho respective owners of samples supplied.
